Maersk nears acquisition deal amid growth spurt in shipping

Article Abstract:

Danish container shipping company A.P. Moller-Maersk Line is nearing an agreement for the purchase of P and O Nedlloyd of the Netherlands. The proposed merger would give the companies a combined market share of 18% globally. Discussions of the deal come at a time when the shipping industry is experiencing a growth spurt as the result of economic expansion in China and an increase in exports coming out of that country.

Neptune Orient ship has sailed

Neptune Orient Lines Ltd. of Singapore has posted share increases for two years, although analysts say container shipping rates have peaked and the shipping industry concern may not be such a good investment in future. Also, there are more freight-shipping lines crowding the market and Chinese economic growth appears to be slowing.

Two shipping firms plan bond sales

Both China Vanke Co. and Cosco Shipping Co. said that they would sell bonds that can be converted into shares. Both firms said that they would use the proceeeds from the offering to expand their operations.
