Mafia hands round the begging bowl

Article Abstract:

The Italian central government reduced its cash outflow to regional government in order to meet national budget criteria necessitated by the adoption of a single European currency and the integration of the European economies. Sicily has been hurt very badly by the reduction in funding and its economic future is precarious. While other regions in Italy have attracted foreign investment, Sicily has failed to as it is heavily in debt and very corrupt. Sicily has more autonomy than other regions, and it has been used to create featherbed jobs in exchange for votes; the government payroll eats 80% of its budget. Sicily is near bankruptcy and needs $880 million to cover its debts. The Sicilian Mafia also reportedly is teetering close to bankruptcy.
