Make or break: Gatt chief says Asia must help rescue Uruguay Round

Article Abstract:

Peter Sutherland, director-general of the international trade group Gatt, believes that greater Asian participation is vital to progress in the Uruguay Round of talks. These talks are intended to reduce protectionist restrictions on international trade by setting up a multilateral trading system. Sutherland has set Dec 15, 1993 as the deadline for completing the seven-year-old negotiations. Offers of conditional access to markets and a greater willingness to open up financial services to foreign competitors are two actions by which Asian countries could speed up the process.

For better or worse: Asia takes a front and centre seat at the WTO

Article Abstract:

Asia is prominent in the new World Trade Organization because of its rapidly increasing international trade which achieved more than 15% in growth of both exports and imports in 1994. However, this prominence has also led to increased attention paid to potentially anti-competitive trading practices and disputes such as the US-Japan automobile industry dispute. The World Trade Organization is pressuring Asian countries to open financial and insurance industries as well as pressuring China to reduce import tariffs.
