Make us competitive - but not yet: India's companies will become world-class only when they are forced to compete

Article Abstract:

A growing competition in India has succeeded in bringing about improvements in products and services. Prior to 1991, the government controlled virtually everything, from the size of the labor force to prices, and there was little competition. Further liberalization of competition will continue the change.

India will mark its 50th year of independence in 1997, and its accomplishments are mixed. To its credit, it has established and maintained the world's largest democracy. However, the country's economic development has been slow and unbalanced, with the countryside lagging behind the towns.

Globalisation and its critics

Article Abstract:

Many anti-capitalists seem to feel that the Sep 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the US show how dangerous and wrong globalisation is. Globalisation is in fact a real force for good, and the only possible cure for poverty.
