Making the most of glass: The winning project in the Shepherd/AJ research award is an examination of the behaviour of brittle materials

Article Abstract:

The potential of glass structures by maximizing material properties and using the best fabrication technology available has been researched. Flat glass production using float processes restricts the module size and tempering and lamination further reduce the available size. A joint or connection to link a series of elements is required and this is based on strength requirements, cost, buildability and installation. Stress fields need to be defined at each point in the element, and precision of fabrication and refinement of design are prerequisites for bearing connections.

Business parks on the rise

Article Abstract:

Surveys show that business parks in Britain have good prospects despite the economic recession. Fitzroy Robinson surveyed business park developers and found them optimistic. They see a tendency towards large developments with two distinct types; large multi-use and compact mid-urban parks. A survey by the Centre for Construction Market Information is also optimistic about potential, forecasting possible shortages of space in some areas, particlularly for large, ready-built, quality buildings. Freehold land sales constitute about 70% of the market.

Making parks for the future from the industrial past

Article Abstract:

Landscape designers Peter and Anne-liese Latz's Burgerpark design in Saarbrucken, Germany relates post-industrial landscapes to modern day environments. It comprises of four individual design layers. The first is designed to illustrate parts of nineteenth-century local history. The park, which took four years to build in 1985, is not as familiar to British architects as other Latz works.
