Malaysia puts infrastructure on hold

Article Abstract:

Malaysia is postponing many large infrastructure developments in an attempt to reduce the financial deficit of the country from 5.2% of GDP in 1997 to 4% in 1998. Confusion surrounds the cancellation of a contract to build the Bakun dam, which was signed between contractors Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) and dam developer Bakun Hydro-Electric Corporation (BHC). The cancellation of the contract came before the government postponement and ABB is seeking compensation for over-runs. The project was predicted to cost $5 billion before inflation and BHC had contracted to cover costs incurred during construction.

Yacyreta deal this year

Article Abstract:

Argentina plans a partial privatization of Yacyreta which could raise $1.5 billion for that country. Yacyreta is a 3,200 MW dam which is being completed on the Parana river and which is also owned by Paraguay. The two countries are also considering building a second large dam across the Parana, a plan which is called the Corpus project. Privatization of Yacyreta could be hindered by environmental concerns. Land will be flooded on both sides of the border as part of this project.
