Manhole ahead

Article Abstract:

Iraq has demanded that the United Nations (UN) chief weapons inspector, Richard Butler, declare that Iraq does not have weapons of mass destruction. Butler has not agreed to this. Hussein aims to increase petroleum exports and rid himself of Butler, whom he perceives as representing the US. France and Russia had planned to ask for more concessions for Iraq, but this will be hindered by Iraq' stance. There is agreement that the problem should not escalate and that Iraq should not flout the UN. There is a danger that the US could increase forces in the Gulf and use air strikes despite the opposition of other UN Security Council members.

Article Abstract:

The UN and the international community should apply unrelenting pressure on Iraq and North Korea to prevent their development of weapons of mass destruction. The need to control the proliferation of such weapons outweighs the case for lifting economic sanctions against Iraq.
