Many steps toward zero inventory

Article Abstract:

Attainment of zero inventory (ZI) may not be a realistic approach for companies that want to attain cost leadership to enhance their competitiveness. Minimum reasonable inventory (MRI) may be a better action. A study of the Philips Group's bid to reduce stocks along the production chain, from raw materials to the distribution outklets, supports the feasibility of MRI. While ZI was not the target, results indicate the impracticality of efforts to decrease stocks beyond the MRI, given the strategic conditions obtaining them.

End-of-life service: a case study

Article Abstract:

A newly developed model revealed that the final ordering practice being presently undertaken by companies, such as Philips, is considerably lower than the ideal level. The model, which utilizes a new approach for collecting and storing data, showed that the existing final ordering ratio is very small for most inexpensive components. Such situation implies a tremendous loss brought about by lost demand.
