Market background: retailing trends: expansion of mass distribution

Article Abstract:

Skin care products distribution has shifted from the exclusivity of selective/specialist distribution channels to mass market outlets. The availability of skin care products in the grocery stores and mass merchandisers has not only increased competition, but also broadened the consumer base by making the products easily available at lower prices. Supermarkets and mass merchandisers have been able to offer competitive prices on a consistent basis because of their scale economies and ability to sustain low margins. Pharmacies have been the major casualties in this shift.

A market research study was conducted on furnitures and furnishings in Germany. The market is divided into three categories: furniture, carpets/other floor coverings, and household textiles/soft furnishings. Some of the major findings are: that furniture production in Germany is on the downtrend because of reduced demand, that wooden furniture is the biggest market sector, and that domestic production of furniture in Germany was affected by less expensive foreign imports.
