Market mover: Perfecto Yasay gives Manila a dose of reform

Article Abstract:

Philippine President Fidel Ramos will probably confirm Perfecto Yasay as the new head of the Securities and Exchange Commission on Oct 21, 1995 guaranteeing further reforms. Yasay took over the SEC on Aug 21, replacing Rosario Lopez, often criticized for holding up needed changes. He quickly implemented several she had resisted, and will next confront the pre-need business of savings plans and the Manila International Futures Exchange. The Philippine Stock Exchange, under Eduardo de los Angeles, is also making sweeping changes.

Sharing the wealth

Article Abstract:

The Philippine stock market has seen remarkable growth in size, wealth, and sophistication over the past two years, and appears poised for more of the same. While the market index slipped from 3,196 to 2,869 over 1994, confidence following the May election should push it higher. Companies increasingly see the market as the best place to raise capital, and the govt's privatization program helps. Petron's 1994 listing drew many small investors into the market, though still more are needed.

Upswing points the way ahead

Article Abstract:

The Philippines ranked sixth in a survey of the performance of major stockmarkets for 1991. Observers are saying that the dynamism of the stockmarket, despite the presence of economic problems, indicates the potential for growth of the country in the coming years. Stockbrokers predict that an upswing in the market will take place before the end of 1992. The government is making the necessary moves that would hopefully lead to continued stockmarket growth.
