Market turmoil reaches leading blue chip Sime Darby

Article Abstract:

Sime Darby's stock may register losses in its fiscal year ending June 1997, because of problems with its broking division, SimeSecurities Sdn. Bhd. Tan Sri Nik Mohamed Nik Yaacob, Sime Darby's chief executive, who has confirmed SimeSecurities' problems, downplayed speculation regarding possible losses, saying that charges will not exceed $30.3 million. According to Tan Sri Nik Mohamed, the broking unit has suffered partly due to the decline of Malaysia's stock market.

Sime Darby's aggressive management may jazz up firm's 'boring' image

Article Abstract:

Many investment analysts are changing their views of Sime Darby Bhd. as 'safe but boring' investment. Some analysts predict that the Malaysian conglomerate could register a 20% growth in net profit in FY 1996 as a result of its acquisition of a major bank and other key properties. Several cautious analysts, however, believe that Sime Darby's financial success will depend largely on how it can quickly transfer earnings from the new properties to its bottomline.

Rosy outlook for Sime Darby

Article Abstract:

Analysts believe that Sime Darby Bhd should have a better long-term outlook than some of the smaller Malaysian companies whose share prices have also fallen during Spring and Summer 1997. The company's remarkable management and diversified operations are drawing investors to its side, despite the government's lending curb on property and stock purchases. Profits are expected to increase from Sime Darby's overseas operations especially in Hong Kong.
