Marquette deal strengthens unit of U.S.-based GE

Article Abstract:

GE Medical Systems, the Milwaukee, WI-based unit of General Electric Co., will buy Milwaukee-based Marquette Medical Systems Inc., the dominant player in the diagnostic cardiology market, under a stock swap deal worth around $824 million or $45 a share. The acquisition will boost GE Medical's share in both the $1.6-billion market for neonatal, fetal and adult patient-monitoring gear, and the $1-billion worldwide market for electrocardiograph machines and exercise stress tests. GE Medical is the No. 1 company in medical diagnostic imaging equipment, while Marquette Medical is the No. 2 player in inpatient-monitoring equipment.

Boston Scientific Loses Patent Case

Article Abstract:

Natick, Mass.-based Boston Scientific must pay $324.4 million in damages to New Brunswick, NJ-based Johnson and Johnson in a patent infringement case. The case, in which Boston Scientific was found guilt of infringing on a patent for a stent heart device, was heard by a Wilmington, Delaware jury.

Johnson and Johnson Unit Pleads Guilty to Charges

LifeScan Inc., which is a division of New Brunswick, NJ-based Johnson and Johnson, has pled guilty to federal criminal charges. The case, which involved the marketing of a defective diagnostic device, has resulted in fines of $60 million levied against LifeScan.
