Martin Pawley: Brutal reminders that technology will always fail--eventually

Article Abstract:

The recent disaster involving the Space Shuttle "Columbia" is an example of technology failing, similar to such past calamities as the "Hindenburg" and "Titantic." Technology ultimately turns against itself, and thus technology needs to be improved constantly or abandoned altogether.

A sale of items in "The National Asset Register" is expected to be carried out in 2002. The register contains an inventory of such national treasures as old masters and grand pianos. Examples of assets that will be let go are given.

Issues are presented concerning whether or not national treasures should be sold by their owners or whether they should be retained for the benefit of the nation. The production of a 'National Asset Register' is discussed.
