Mass appeal: the pope brings his message to Asia

Article Abstract:

Pope John Paul II baffles the press in being able to evoke positive responses from many parts of the world when it has dubbed him as irrelevant to the modern world. The pope's popularity lies in the fact that he understands the complexities of modern life and is willing to stand up for his beliefs against very vocal and aggressive opponents. He has come to symbolize a world of virtues in an increasingly competitive atmosphere. The crowds that met the pope in his Asia visit bear testimony to his relevance to the 1990s.

Money talks

Article Abstract:

English is increasingly the common language of Asia, driven by economics, politics, history, and the dominance of US media. Though only 377 million people speak English as their first language, some 1.8 billion are exposed to it daily, and by the year 2001 a billion will be speaking or studying it. Asia's export-driven growth has encouraged the development of a lingua franca, to help Asians speak to one another. It also carries less political baggage than native languages in many countries with minority populations.

A passage to Golden Mountain

Article Abstract:

About 175,000 Chinese immigrants were processed at the immigration station on Angel Island, CA, between 1910 and 1940. The discriminatory Chinese Exclusion Acts forced many of them to be detained for as long as two years, and their plight is described in the poems they etched on the walls of the Angel Island dormitory. Their success in the US is a tribute to their hard work and perseverance and a condemnation of discrimination and quota systems.
