China's Ministry of Electric Power has ceded considerable authority to its impressively successful corporate arm, China Power Investment Corp. Charged with facilitating power projects, CPIC contains the ministry's commercial functions and holds stakes in seven power plants and a domestic securities firm, as well as control of an offshore loan-arranging subsidiary. It is empowered to form joint ventures with foreign firms and to manage power plants abroad and at home. It also has impressive political connections.

King-sized ambitions

Article Abstract:

Pacific Cigar Chmn David Tang is intent on recovering the $6 million he put into the company which is the single biggest distributor of Cuban cigars in Asia. Although there are other investors in the company, Tang has complete control over the monopoly which can reach a mark-up of 300%. Tang plans to raise Asian consumption of cigars from 1.5 million every year to 5 million every year. This venture follows Tang's success with the China Club.

Gathering pool for Asia's funds

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's private bankingindustry has been experiencing increase in funds with the economic growth in Asian countries and with more mainland Chinese transferring their funds to the colony banks. Furthermore, overseas Chinese also deposit their money in the different Hong Kong banks. Private bankers in Hong Kong offer a safer sanctuaryfor these individuals and corporations since the bankers offer dependable security and secrecy.
