Skeletal solutions for the London Underground

Article Abstract:

Santiago Calatrava has been commissioned to design modular stations for London Underground Ltd. (LUL). The new design will be used for all surface level stations and can be assembled in a short time period. Calatrava has used a skeletal structure consisting of a 559mm diameter steel tube spine supporting centrally housed rooms. The spine is supported by two sculptural steel columns and can be use in symmetrical and asymmetrical station layouts. The commission is an effort to reestablish LUL's reputation for good design while providing value for money.

Technology brings security to Glasgow high-rise flats

Article Abstract:

Glasgow City Council is introducing high technology services into its blocks of flats. Alarm systems for vulnerable tenants, sophisticated lifts and satellite and cable television are being installed along with structural repairs that have done much to reduce the problems faced by residents. Additionally, closed circuit television and security systems are used to restrict entry. However, the most effective measure from the tenant's point of view is the introduction of 24 hour concierge services.
