Saving the bear

Article Abstract:

The chaotic economic situation of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has prevented it from sufficiently servicing the foreign debt accumulated by the defunct Soviet Union. The CIS has tried to keep credit lines open by paying select creditors, but decreasing hard currency reserves could lead the CIS seeking debt relief. Bankers are apprehensive because that will cut off the CIS from financial markets from three to five years as economic reforms tied to debt relief are dictated by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Power Surge

Article Abstract:

South Korea's public sector Korea Electric Power Corp (Kepco) plans to offer 8% of its stock to foreign investors following a 120% increase in the Kepco share since Aug 1992. Although Kepco is a profitable investment, there is speculation that its share value fall after a sudden climb of 120% in a short period of little over two months. Moreover, Kepco profits may also decline if it adopts the declining balance method rather than the straight-line process under its tax devaluation policy.
