Massive 252% profit growth as easy as ABC

Paging service provider ABC Communication Holdings posted an attributable profit of HK$731.9 mn for the year to 31 March 1998, up a massive 252% from the previous year. Turnover decreased 14.6% to HK$278.6 mn but operating profit rose 42.7% to HK$15.7 mn. The company attributed the profit growth to the disposal of an 11.86% stake worth HK$763 mn in SmarTone Telecommunications Holdings. The company's paging subscriber base has decreased by about 17% during the year due to PCS operators lowering service charges. *

Hongkong Telecom may use rivela' cable to carry iTV

Hongkong Telecom may use rivals' networks to carry its Interactive TV service in certain areas where Hongkong Telecom had difficulty gaining access or finds its relatively high cost to lay cables. However, it has not discussed the details of any possible deal. Currently, only 50% of households have access to Hongkong Telecom's broadband network. Meanwhile, Hutchison Telecom, New World Telephone and New T&T are still in the early stage of installing such networks. *
