Master of the concrete

Article Abstract:

Harry Seidler is the best known Australian architect. Born in Austria, he came to Britain as a refugee in the Second World War and later studied in Canada. He moved to Australia in the 1950s. Seidler's main influence was Walter Gropius and he remains concerned with social responsibility, using technology to the full and using the minimum of resources. He was also influenced by engineer, Pier Luigi Nervi in his use of materials. Seidler criticises post modernism and the buildings of Canary Wharf, London, England.

Re-educating the client

Article Abstract:

Charles McKean is secretary of the RIAS and is anxious to re-establish the architectural profession. Architects must change their relationship with society. Firstly, professional indemnity insurance should be obligatory. Secondly, architcts must educate their clients and make them responsible for the quality of their buildings. The public often see surveyors as the people to be consulted on building matters but architects must show that they can provide extra value and quality.
