Mayor-power

Article Abstract:

The US Conference of Mayors of 1999 has been self-congratulatory, and US mayors have come to exert more power, with some playing key roles in welfare and education reform. Mayors also tend to reflect the Third Way rather than the liberalism of former times. Divisions have emerged between urban and rural voters as more of the population has shifted to rural areas and suburbs. Mayors could be affected if there is an economic downturn which could lead to more crime and rising welfare rolls in urban areas.
