Venture capital companies, in the UK, are having to consider new environmental legislation from the UK environmental Agency and from the European Union. Venture capitalists are having to cope with the implications of environmental concerns as they invest in firms over longer periods. Environmental due diligence has become a important area for consideration within deals. Environmental consultants have more work and some are planning to use their expertise in Eastern European countries. Environmental Resource Management works in 35 countries for large law firms and corporations.

Recognising patience as a virtue

Article Abstract:

Investors need to take a long-term approach when dealing with family owned companies. Studies have shown companies under family ownership often out perform other companies, over a 25 year period. Venture capitalists' see the funding of management buyouts as a short-term investment. Many family owned businesses have been denied venture capital, which is used mostly to fund management buyouts. Owner-managed or family businesses are often reluctant to devolve control to investors. Venture capitalists should be prepared to assist companies move forward, without taking control.

Article Abstract:

Bankers Trust underwrote 1.4 billion pounds sterling worth of leveraged finance for nine deals during 1995-1997. The company has regained its position as a leader in Europe's leveraged buyout market after becoming vulnerable in the overheated market of the 1980s. Bankers Trust has developed close links with Charterhouse after arranging a novel funding structure for Charterhouse's acquisition of Inchcape Testing Services in 1996. Bankers Trust has also completed substantial financings with other equity partners.
