Merger stirs up trouble in Asia's toyland: beleaguered industry fears more pressure from Mattel-Tyco deal

Asia's toy manufacturers are concerned that the planned merger of Mattel Inc. and Tyco Inc. will further hurt the industry, already plagued by high operating costs due to inflation and increasing labor expenses as well as stagnant retail prices in the US market. Toymakers are worried that the deal, which has cut down the number of large US toy companies buying from them, has provided Mattel with more leverage to demand lower prices from original equipment manufacturers. They will have to tighten inventory control, scale back prices and wait longer for payment. Mattel had decided in late Nov. 1996 to acquire Tyco for $775 million.

Hanoi heeds protests with an anticorrupt purge

The Vietnamese government has begun to focus on pushing ahead with its anticorruption campaign in response to pleas from investors. The government's anticorruption drive, which has resulted in the dismissal of Central Committee member Vu Xuan Truong, Thai Binh province's governor, has also purged over 50 other provincial officials. According to Carlyle Thayer, head of the School of Politics at the Australian Defense Force Academy in Canberra, the purge highlights the extent of government corruption in Vietnam's provinces.

Vietnam puts a price tag on official corruption; finance ministry reveals state agencies can't account for about $5.8 billion in bureaucratic assets

Article Abstract:

A survey by Vietnam's Ministry of Finance has found that state agencies cannot account for about $5.8 billion in bureaucratic assets, comprised mostly of property, luxury cars and office equipment. Although the ministry is not attributing the entire missing amount to corruption, the figure nonetheless mirrors the extent of official corruption in the country. A series of audits on state-owned enterprises is being considered by the government in 1999 in an effort to reveal more graft.
