Microsoft raids disk pirates: Singapore's crackdown efforts may be working

Article Abstract:

The Singaporean government assisted Microsoft Corp. in raiding the shops of software pirates, signaling the country's renewed commitment to intellectual property rights protection. Microsoft Singapore conducted raids on shops located in Singapore's shopping districts, such as those in Orchard Road and Scotts Road, and was able to seize some 1,000 pirated CD-ROM computer disks that are suspected to contain pirated software. Singapore is moderately successful in stemming software piracy, with US-based Business Software Alliance estimating the number of pirated software in Singapore dropping from 59% in 1996 to 56% in 1997.
