Microsoft's earnings climb by 24%

Microsoft Corp. of the United States posted a 24 percent increase in profit to $3.14 billion for the first quarter, up from $2.53 billion a year ago. The software giant is planning a $19 billion repurchase of its stock. MSN online service missed its financial projection for the quarter, illustrating continued market share gains by Google Inc.

NTT Communications hit by loss at U.S. unit

NTT Communications Corp.'s Verio Inc. unit posted a $777 million (884.8 million euros) net loss for the year ending December 31, 2000. The company expects to post a $1.29 billion loss for the 2001 year.
