Military solution: army crackdown could further alienate Sindh

Article Abstract:

A military crackdown has been imposed in Sindh province in Pakistan in response to general lawlessness, part of which is blamed on terrorists with connections in India. The military has agreed to abide by Article 147 of the constitution which preserves civilian supremacy. Reactions of civilians and opposition leaders were less hostile than expected, perhaps in anticipation of restoration of law and order in the troubled province. Nevertheless, fears were raised that the military could ask for martial law powers under Article 245.

Mayhem in Sindh

Article Abstract:

Military movements in Pakistan's Sindh region is resulting in popular opposition. On Jun 7, 1992, an official report of an armed confrontation in the Sindh area was met with disbelief and protests since the civilians involved were actually supporters of two widows involved in a land dispute with their manager. The supporters had been arrested by soldiers on Jun 5, 1992. The pervading public distrust of the military was aggravated when the manager involved in the dispute also died while in military custody.
