Minefields of peace: Afghanistan

Millions of mines litter Afghanistan. Left behind by Russians and mujahideen, they are not the only danger. Afghanistan is a place of sorrow and deprivation, with high infant mortality, physical disabilities and low life expectancy. Rich nations and the UN are providing some aid.

Enologists at the University of California, Davis have discovered that some of the vine cuttings they have sent to vineyards are infected with the closterovirus that causes leafroll. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of Davis's vines discovered the infection.
