Article Abstract:

Nova hut (NH) (Ostrava, Czech Republic), steel firm, has completed the first stage of a mini-mill at a cost of 10.2 bil Kc. The mini-mill has just been commissioned. The equipment, which includes a heating furnace and a rolling train of the type Steckel, has a capacity of about 1 mil t of hot rolled bands per year. The construction of the mini-mill was fully realised by ICF Kaiser (US). The project's decisive technological equipment was supplied by Mannesmann Demag (Germany), Voest Alpine Industrieanlagenbau (Austria), Tippins (US) and Stein-Heurtey (France). The rolling train steckel is able to roll a band with a thickness of 1.5-13 mm, a width of 1,575 mm and a roll mass of nearly 30 t. The mini-mill, which will have 441 employees, will enable NH to decrease the number of employees by 700. Besides, NH will decrease its metal consumption by 145,000 t per year, its power consumption by about 40% and its costs on maintenance due to the mini-mill. Besides, the mini-mill will improve the environment in the region significantly.
