Article Abstract:

There has been no interest from multinational concerns in providing the technology required for the planned Project 909 semiconductor foundry in Shanghai, China. Foreign concerns have a number of worries about becoming involved in this project, which is being managed by Shanghai Hua Hong Microelectronics. These include intellectual-property rights in China and falling international demand for semiconductors. At present, the Chinese semiconductor industry supplies only 20% of domestic demand, and there is heavy reliance on the US, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan.

Article Abstract:

The Asian financial crisis has prompted companies from that region to reconsider plans to invest in the Wangqiao Industrial Zone in Pudong, China. This will force Shanghai Wangqiao Industrial Zone Development Co to focus on attracting investment from European and US companies in 1998. The company is not particularly concerned about committed investors reneging, but is very worried about projects still being negotiated and about future deals. There is likely to be very strong competition for foreign investment in China in 1998.

Proof of the Pudong

Article Abstract:

High-technology manufacturing zones near Shanghai have attracted many overseas companies, partly by keeping lease rates competitive and offering superior infrastructure. The Jinqiao Export Processing Zone has 45 foreign multinationals signed up and has distributed 60% of the land devoted to industrial use. Companies active there report satisfaction with the development company, which plans major upgrades in telecommunications and power. Zhangjiang High-Tech Park has started more slowly.
