Moi, lord of Kenya's empty dance

Article Abstract:

Kenyan president, Daniel arap Moi, has to leave his post by year-end 2002, in line with the constitution. Moi's supporters lack interest in economic reform, appear unworried about corruption, and do not believe in political pluralism. This is reflected in Kenya's economic problems and political sterility, while corruption is a serious problem. Civil servants' pay is often delayed, utilities provide a low level of service, and there is a high rate of infection with HIV among adults. A loan has been withheld by the International Monetary Fund until some of these problems are tackled.

At the end of a long reign

Article Abstract:

Kenyan president, Daniel arap Moi, has reigned for 20 years and a battle for succession has started inside the ruling party. Moi appears to want to allow as much in the way of resources for his ethnic group as possible and hopes for a successor who will permit him to retire safely. The government has been blamed by Amnesty International for encouraging ethnic conflict. Economic growth is not likely to be above 1% to 2% in 1998 and the main road to Mombasa, Kenya's key port, has fallen into disrepair after floods.
