A fortress against change

Article Abstract:

European companies were very unwilling to abandon traditional management hierarchies and working practices when the US was undergoing wide-reaching structural changes in the second half of the 1980s. However, Europe began to suffer weak productivity growth and rising unemployment as competition from Asia grew stronger and product life-cycles shortened. The continental European system has been based for many years on consensus, and this has brought a serious lack of competition. It is now time for changes to be made if Europe is not to be overwhelmed by competition from Asia and the US.

Fortress Europe

Article Abstract:

Some 500,000 illegal immigrants enter the European Union (EU) annually, and this hampers efforts to allow the free movement of labor within the EU. The is a large number of people from the Balkans and North Africa keen to enter the EU, so the flow of illegal immigrants is unlikely to cease while the EU is richer. There is a need for greater cooperation between European countries, rather than integration. There is also a need for harmonization of treatment of asylum seekers, and for a common fund to aid countries like Germany which attract large numbers of refugees.
