The long arm of the Ghoul

Article Abstract:

The Mars '96 spacecraft, which crashed into the Pacific ocean near Chile on Nov 17, 1996, contained 24 experiments, worth at least $180 million. The expedition was to have investigated Mars from the distance and sent four probes to the planet's surface. The failure of the mission has caused considerable embarrassment to Russia, and has also disrupted the work of scientists from 21 other countries. It is now unlikely that any funds will be available for a follow-up mission planned for early in the 21st century.

Mars rocks

Article Abstract:

Meteorites from Mars have landed on Earth, though only 13 of these have been identified. There are problems in identifying such meteorites, and the European Space Agency is seeking to make it easier. Rock samples from Earth are to be examined after they have been attached to a space craft and returned to earth, to assess the impact of re-entry. Analysis of the rocks should allow Martian samples to be spotted more easily, since the Earth samples are similar to types found on Mars.

Surveying another globe: Mars

Article Abstract:

NASA's unmanned spacecraft Global Surveyor will begin orbiting Mars on Sep 11, 1997, but it will not reach an optimal viewing orbit until Mar 1998. The spacecraft will complete a map of Mars's surface and look for signs of water. Other spacecraft are also due to orbit the planet.
