Money isn't everything

Article Abstract:

The problems facing Asian banks are particularly severe in Indonesia, where the banking system is believed to be on the point of collapse. Many exporters based in Indonesia have suspended output because they cannot obtain working capital or import inputs, while foreign lenders have mainly stopped accepting letters of credit from Indonesian banks. In Thailand, liquidity has not completely dried up, but the partial credit crunch is creating severe problems. In general, Asian banks are unwilling to disclose the information that would give investors sufficient confidence to assist in recapitalizing financial systems.

Pyramids of debts

Article Abstract:

Japan's enormous but predictable bad-loan banking problems will not go away anytime soon, as their scale goes far beyond the possibility of a write-off and many of the underlying problems persist. These banks never sought to be profitable and rarely were, with the feeblest designed for markets that no longer exist, such as direct loans to major industry. Observers and ratings agencies doubt a turnaround can be complete within 10 years. Now the banks hope to grow their assets elsewhere in Asia, creating currency-related risks.

Daiwa damaged

Article Abstract:

The Sep 26, 1995 revelation of the $1.1 billion in losses rogue trader Toshihide Iguchi cost Daiwa Bank stunned the community and severely hurt Daiwa's reputation, and by extension, that of other Japanese banks. The problem only came to light when Iguchi stepped forward, indicating the bank's poor oversight mechanisms. Top executives at US and other banks say they and their European counterparts have long taken such problems seriously, making back-room and computer operations a major expense.
