Road show

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's Television Broadcasts (TVB) is losing market share at home but gaining international markets. New satellite competitors are partly responsible for TVB's loss of domestic market share, but that same broadcasting technology is aiding the development of overseas markets. TVB can transmit its own shows abroad because of its efficient production studio and its longtime experience in TV programming. Profit for the domestic market during the first six months of 1995 dropped 32%, but the company's international arm was productive.

Visual clutter: Asia may get more TV-viewing choices than it wants

Article Abstract:

Asia's sudden boom in cable and satellite television services will shortly lead to a bust as many collapse or are bought out by a few monoliths, say experts who point to a similar pattern in the US and the UK. Australia, Taiwan, India, and Indonesia are particularly ripe for a shakeout. Programing remains scarce, with many competitors carrying the same channels, and more choice does not mean more viewing time for customers. Regardless of the number of channels available, most tend to watch no more than six.

Birds of a feather

Article Abstract:

Two Hong Kong-based companies plan to launch competing 'hot bird' satellites which beam a number of television channels into a single market. APT Satellite is owned by several Chinese ministries and plans to launch Apstar-2R in early 1997. Asia Satellite Telecommunications plans to launch its AsiaSat-3 later in 1997. One media consultant in Hong Kong observed that there will not be sufficient business for either satellite to become the dominant service provider in Asia.
