Museums galore

Article Abstract:

There are a number of collaborations between museums and architects world wide, especially in the US where extensions and new museums are being built. European projects include the restoration of the Pompidou Center, Paris, France, and Bankside Tate, London, England. Museums need more space for their collections, and many works of modern art are large. Museums attract tourists who spend in the museums and benefit the surrounding areas with their spending, so civic authorities tend to want to attract museums.

Moving mummy's attic

Article Abstract:

Egypt plans a new museum near the Pyramids of Giza. The Egyptian Museum in Cairo is affected by traffic vibration and pollution, and is in need of more space. Land has been allocated for the new museum and a feasibility study has been carried out. A design competition will be held, and there will then be a need for funding. The new location is pollution-free, and offers more light and space than the Cairo museum, so there is enthusiasm for the project, despite the logistical and other problems involved.

Arte povera: Russia's museums

Article Abstract:

Many of Russia's finest museums and galleries are struggling with meager budgets and underpaid staff. Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery underwent a 10-year renovation, but now receives only around $2 mil in federal funding, a fifth of what is needed. The Hermitage and other museums are also underfunded.
