COAL SECTOR OPENED UP

Article Abstract:

The Cabinet of Government of India has decided to allow private sector participation in the exploration and mining of coal and lignite. It will make necessary amendments to the Coal Nationalisation Act, 1973. The Government's decision follows an agreement that it had signed with World Bank in September 1997. The World Bank had sanctioned IBRD loan for coal development on the condition that the 1973 Act would be amended by 1998 March. The amendment will now be introduced in the Budget session of Parliament in February 1999. There are several mines which are economically unviable for Coal India Limited. Privatisation seeems to be the best solution for such mines. The geographical location of the mines were such that the infusing more funds into them economically is unfeasible. (um)(psr)
