NTAPS upgrade studied

Article Abstract:

TRW has announced that it will begin to evaluate and demonstrate upgrades to its Near Term Active Protection System, which has been contracted by the US Army Tankautomotive and Armaments Command to be used to defend main battle tanks against a variety of kinetic-energy and chemical-energy weapons. The company is considering equipping the system with advanced infrared, ultraviolet, laser and radar sensors, as well as aiming, pointing, steering and thruster technologies.

US Army to begin tests with revised ID system

Article Abstract:

Boeing Co is expected to deliver 33 Lightweight Personnel Detection Device (LPDD) sets to the US Army by the end of Mar 2000 for testing by the Simulation Training and Instrumentation Command at the Joint Readiness Training Center. The LPDD is based on the Oerlikon Contraves Defense Combat SIMLAS Plus multi-function target engagement simulation, combat identification and laser pointing system. A low-rate initial production of the LPDD is scheduled to start in 2002.

US DoD is to evaluate SMArt 155 artillery projectile

Article Abstract:

The US Dept of Defense has named the 37 projects that will receive FY2000 funding under the Foreign Comparative Testing (FCT) program. The US Army has two projects: the SMArt155 fire-and-forget multi-sensor counter- battery/anti-armor projectile developed by GIW in Germany and the mine- protected clearance vehicles made by Denel-Mechem and Reumech OMC in South Africa. The US Navy/Marine Corps have five such projects while the US Air Force has four new-starts.
