OTC medicines, cosmetics and personal care products in France

Article Abstract:

The French market for over-the-counter (OTC) medicines amounted to around FFr22.8 billion in 1997, with the total drug market worth FFr134.4 billion. France is the OECD's third largest pharmaceutical exporter, mainly to Europe, Africa and Asia. Consumption of cosmetics and personal care products in 1997 amounted to some FFr27.66 billion, with skin care products accounting for 31% of the home market, followed by hair care products with 29%, toiletries with 24% and cosmetics with 15%. It is expected that the cosmetics and personal care products market will continue to grow, despite fierce competition.

Chemists' goods in Germany

Article Abstract:

The production of the Germany's pharmaceutical industry amounted to 34.4 billion German marks in 1997, up 0.7% from 1996, with the total retail market valued at 50 billion German marks. Production for 1998 is predicted to have risen by 2-3% to 35.3 billion German marks. Production of toiletries and cosmetics fell by 4% during 1997 to 8.1 billion German marks, although consumption rose by 4% to 17.1 billion German marks in 1998. The greatest expansion is expected to be in over-the-counter products.

Chemists' goods in Italy

Article Abstract:

Italian consumption of toiletries and cosmetics reached 11.66 trillion lira in 1997, up 12.4% from 1996, with exports up 10.3% for the year. Total sales of goods in pharmacies and hospitals reached 24.75 trillion lira. Production of cleaning products rose by 13.3% while consumption was up 14.5% during 1997. It is expected that pharmaceuticals' consumption has peaked and will stabilise as the government bids to restrain expenditure.
