National Grid, Sprint focus on Brazil

Article Abstract:

National Grid Holdings Group PLC (UK) and Sprint Corp (US) are considering a joint venture to build a national telephone network in Brazil. Bids for a Brazilian national phone license and 4 regional phone licenses are due the week of Dec 7, 1998. If National Grid and Sprint do decide to submit a bid, their subsequent investment in the Brazilian project could reach $1 billion over many years. In Nov 1998, National Grid executives once again stated their desire to expand overseas by forming partnerships with telecoms companies, on the pattern of its successful Energis business.

BT is pleased about chances for EU approval of AT&T deal

Article Abstract:

British Telecommunications PLC (BT) was confident about the chances for the European Union's (EU) approval of the company's proposed $11 billion joint venture with AT&T Corp. EU competition commissioner Karel Van Miert stated that the deal will probably be approved after BT and AT&T agreed to sell of some assets in the UK. The EU was concerned that the joint venture would have gained a dominant hold on the market in Great Britain.

KPN's confidence doesn't catch on with investors

KPN NV tried to assure financial analysts that it is capable of financing its planned mobile services expansion after its partner Hutchison Whampoa pulled out of the 50-50 UMTS mobile phone venture which resulted in a 33% downgrade on the value of its stock.
