The future of the city of Miami was put to a vote of residents on Sep 4, 1997. Citizens who wanted the city to become part of Dade County because of its greater resources lost a battle handily, and their frustration stemmed from a corruption investigation that revealed a debt in 1996 of $68 million.

The Senate committee investigating campaign-finance abuse in the 1996 campaign, headed by Tennessee Republican Fred Thompson, aims to generate enough public outrage about the abuse to result in real reforms. Although the public want reforms, the politicians that could bring them about may not.
