Sweet & savory biscuits

Article Abstract:

A review of the retail market for sweet and savory biscuits in France, the UK, Italy, Germany and Spain from 1993 to 1997 reveals limited substantial growth in consumption levels. The trend is attributed to increased preference for low-sugar, low-fat biscuit varieties as well as sweetened biscuits in majority of the markets. To cope with the trend, manufacturers are introducing innovative products and new packaging strategies. Lower prices have also resulted from increasing market competition and expansion of private label goods. Supermarkets are the dominant distributors in all markets except Germany.

Distribution: retail: sweet & savoury biscuits

Article Abstract:

In 1997, the most significant channel for sales of sweet and savoury biscuits in Italy were supermarkets/hypermarkets. In fact, supermarkets/hypermarkets accounted for 60.3% of sales by volume in the above-mentioned year. One of the factors which have made supermarkets/hypermarkets popular to the Italians is the rapidly increasing number of Italian women who work. The time constraints experienced by working women have made them prefer the convenience of purchasing savoury biscuits in supermarkets/hypermarkets in stead of from small specialty bake shops.
