A Christmas catastrophe

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Labor government has been hit by a scandal leading to the resignation of a cabinet minister, Peter Mandelson, and the paymaster general, Geoffrey Robinson. Mandelson borrowed from Robinson and did not declare the loan. Mandelson should have questioned whether the loan represented an attempt by Robinson to influence the government. The Labor party promised to improve the standards of public life, and yet appears not to take the issue seriously enough.
