New WTO chief targets trade deal

Article Abstract:

Pascal Lamay, former trade commission for the European Union, has been appointed as director general of the World Trade Organization. Mr. Lamay's first order of business with the trade body will be to lead discussions on the trade pact known as the Doha Round. Ministers from 148 countries are scheduled to meet in Hong Kong in December 2005 to take part in what are considered 'make or break' talks on the agreement.

EU maintains China arms embargo

Article Abstract:

Trade relations between the European Union and China are growing in importance, although Chinese Premier Wen Jiabo and Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende failed in summit talks yesterday, to reach agreements over textiles and arms trade.
