One region lags behind the island's high-tech boom

Article Abstract:

The Taiwanese city of Taichung and its surrounding areas have been economically disadvantaged compared to the rest of the country. The big industrial firms based in the city have moved elsewhere to places where labor costs are lesser, such as mainland China and Indonesia. High-tech firms prefer the infrastructure and lifestyle of Taiwan's other cities. The city is also disadvantaged by overbuilding in its real estate sector, where property prices have fallen significantly and vacancy rates are averaging 25%.

'Free PC' sparks market rivalry among Korean net service providers

Article Abstract:

Competition among Internet service providers (ISPs) intensifies in South Korea, as a growing number of ISPs are offering free computer units to subscribers. Such an approach, which aims to encourage clients to sign up long-term contracts, is made possible through the rapidly declining prices of personal computers in the country. Chollian, for instance, has recently announced to provide free PCs in exchange of a monthly fee of $36.15.
