New survey on tech change

Article Abstract:

The Economic Council of Canada recently conducted a survey called "Working with Technology", in which about 1,000 employers from different industries in Canada responded to requests for descriptions of their use of computer-based technology from 1980-1985, and of anticipated automation through 1990. New technologies were classified and resulting changes in organization and employment were compiled. The survey results include: 1980-1985 brought computer technology to 75 percent of those surveyed; large firms and subsidiaries of foreign firms were the biggest innovators; wholesale and retail trade represented the highest innovation rates; innovators and non-innovators had similar employment records; innovative firms had higher wages and wage increases; and two-thirds of the innovations consisted of lower-cost technologies such as office automation.
