New tiltrotor assembly centre

Article Abstract:

Bell Helicopter Textron will erect a new $40-million tiltrotor assembly plant at Amarillo, TX, which will be the manufacturing center for the V-22 Osprey and the Bell 609 tiltrotor aircraft. The new 450,000-sq-ft facility will be located on a 179-acre site at the Amarillo International Airport, and will accommodate 200 employees in 1999 and will increase to 1,200 by 2004. The new assembly center is expected to yield up to 100 tiltrotor aircraft annually, and should meet the US government's order for 458 V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft and 67 initial orders and deposits for the B609.

V-22 infra-red systems win

Article Abstract:

Raytheon Systems has won an $8-million contract option from Boeing's Rotorcraft division in Philadelphia, PA, to supply seven more infra-red systems for the US Marine Corps V-22 Osprey under the low rate initial production (LRIP) phase of the tiltrotor aircraft program. The systems, called AN/AAQ-27, will give Osprey pilots visibility through smoke, darkness, haze and adverse weather. Raytheon started deliveries in September 1998 for the LRIP program, which has a total value of $25.6 million. An award for full production is anticipated in 1999.

Remote-control K-Max struts its stuff

Article Abstract:

Kaman Aerospace Corp demonstrated its K-Max lift helicopter in 'manned autonomous' mode for the US Marine Corps in field trials conducted in Jan 2001, at Quantico, VA. At the end of the demo period, around 50 missions were flown using remotely controlled landings and take-offs and pre- planned routes. The trials, which were conducted under a $7-million program, were used to show that autonomous load-carrying is feasible in a field environment.
