New world order emerging

Article Abstract:

The late-1997 round of high-level diplomatic activity reflects the development of a new multipolar world order. The four nations involved are the US, Russia, China and Japan, and the focus of relations between them is economic rather than political or based on security treaties. The governments are seeking strategic partnerships rather than alliances. Russia, China and Japan wish, most importantly, to develop good relations with the US, which is the only superpower, but the global perspective places an obligation on all the countries to seek good multilateral relations.

Japanese politics in ferment: groupings around strong personalities may mature into parties

Article Abstract:

Japan's evolving political system promises to bring the country true democracy at last, but the process will be protracted and convoluted. Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama's ruling coalition is likely to break up soon, as is the chief opposition group, the New Frontier Party. New rules favor large parties but none have yet emerged that can agree internally on policies and positions. Japan's former system encouraged niche parties with sectoral interests. A strong two-party system would benefit the country.

Japan cries for change

Article Abstract:

The Liberal Democratic Party in Japan is still the most powerful party, although its poor performance in the cities reflects the extent of voters' alienation from it. The Communist Party is viewed as faithful to its principles, but is not a viable option for leadership. Many perceive the Democratic Party, under Naoto Kan, as the best hope for the future. The period of the unchallenged one-party rule is now over, and voters are increasingly seeking models in Europe, particularly Italy and Britain.
