News Corp., Telecom Italia end talks

Article Abstract:

News Corp., headed by Rupert Murdoch, and Telecom Italia SpA have terminated negotiations over the creation of a digital-television alliance in Italy. Both sides failed to follow through on a preliminary agreement that involved News Corp. buying an 80% share in Stream SpA, the pay-television unit of Telecom Italia. The issue of lucrative soccer rights and political opposition to Mr. Murdoch's aggressive expansion into Italian markets also hurt the deal.
