Article Abstract:

Den Fujita, who controls 50% of McDonald's Company (Japan) Ltd. and runs it by himself, could be preparing to list his company on the stock market. This is what analysts have inferred from his aggressive marketing campaign begun in late 1991 and his need for funds to finance his expansion into the toys and video rentals industry. In addition, his sons can avoid Japan's inheritance taxes of up to 70% if the company goes public. However, the Tokyo stockmarket may not be able to absorb a big new issue, and Fujita's management will be subjected to close scrutiny by stockholders. Fujita has vehemently denied the reports.

Guessing game: government hikes its population growth estimate

Article Abstract:

Revised estimates of Hong Kong's population in 2010 reflect higher growth rates but also confusion over what will happen after China takes control in 1997. A recent estimate projects 7.5 million residents in 2010, 1 million more than forecast in 1991. This reflects a growth rate around 2% annually, up from 0.3%-1.3% in the 1980s, and emigration rates down to 40,000-50,000 from 66,000 in 1992. If the transition in 1997 goes well, many expatriates could return; if it goes badly, many current residents will flee.

Sign of the times

Article Abstract:

The Asahi Journal, Japan's left-leaning weekly, will discontinue publication. Once very popular among students and radicals, the newspaper has seen its circulation and profit go down, signalling an end to Japan's radicalism. The Asahi Journal's followers expected mother company Asahi Shimbun to continue publication despite losses but company executives claim that the losses were too big to carry.
