Nice market, we'll take it

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese companies are investing heavily in semiconductor production, and Taiwan looks set to increase its stake in the market from 9% to over 15% in the year from Jul 1998. Chip prices have dropped as a result of the Asian financial crisis, and some Taiwanese companies have scaled back investment plans. Slumps lead to reductions in capacity, and Taiwanese companies hope to benefit when demand recovers Taiwanese companies are able to carry out logic chip foundry work in difficult times, and move capacity into making memory chips when there is a shortage.

The restructuring of South Korean conglomerates (chaebol) is being carried out by President Kim Dae Jung, who sees the chaebols expansion and debts as having led to economic problems.
