No. 1 retailer in Britain uses 'Clubcard' to thwart Wal-Mart

Article Abstract:

Tesco PLC of the United Kingdom has greater market share than rival ASDA Group PLC also of the United Kingdom (subsidiary of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. of the United States) in Britain. The supermarket chain uses a loyalty program called 'Clubcard' that also collects detailed market research information. The market share for groceries is 31 percent for Tesco PLC compared to 16 percent for Wal-Mart's Asda chain.

Wal-Mart gets smaller in the U.K

ASDA Group Ltd. of the United Kingdom is starting to downsize, opening a convenience store in Northampton, England, in an attempt to spark sluggish sales. The department store chain has in the past only opened larger retail units. ASDA Group Ltd. is a subsidiary of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. of the United States.

Whole Foods opens new front

Article Abstract:

U.S.-based Whole Foods Market Inc. announced plans to build its largest store yet in London, England, totaling 80,000 square feet. The chain has 185 American stores, with three in Canada and six in the U.K. The firm estimates that a potential exists for about 40 stores across the U.K.
